College Committees

Dean's Council

This committee advises the Dean on allocation of resources and on appointments of faculty and senior staff. The physical, personnel and financial resources of the college are the responsibility of the Dean and Dean's Council. It also advises the Dean on all matters of policy and administration pertaining to the College and serves as a nominating committee for decanal committees.   Dean's Council is composed of the four academic department Chairs, the Hospital Director, Associate/Assistant Deans.  Ad hoc members include the Assistant to the Dean, the Senior Manager Finance and Information Technology and the Director of Advancement.

Accreditation Steering Committee

This six-member committee reviews progress versus the timeline and, as needed and appropriate, identifies next steps and/or takes corrective action in the Accreditation process.  Members ensure that needed Cross-Working Group communication and synchronization happens.  It also provides high-level guidance to Working Groups and acts in an advisory role to the Dean.  

Companion Animal Scientific Review Committee

This committee reviews and ranks proposals that have been pre-screened by the OVC Pet Trust Fund Research Committee and decides on the level of funding for selected projects. This occurs in association with the yearly OVC Pet Trust Fund competitions for research funds.

DVM Program Committee

The DVM Program Committee is responsible for the academic program (i.e. admissions, curriculum, schedule of studies, externship, etc.). It is chaired by the Associate Dean, Academic and has 15 members, including one DVM student from each class. The four subcommittees of the Program Committee are:

Academic Review
The duties of this 12-member sub-committee are to consider and dispose of requests for academic consideration and to decide on the ability of students with academic difficulties to proceed in the program. It is chaired by the Associate Dean, Academic.

Admissions
This sub-committee selects students for admission. The nine members of the Sub-committee, including one student, select applicants who meet the selection criteria approved by the DVM Program Committee. The sub-committee also recommends admission policies to the DVM program Committee.  The majority of the members are faculty. It is chaired by the Associate Dean, Students.

Awards
This sub-committee formulates policies regarding the effective use of funds designated for undergraduate and graduate student awards. Members establish with donors the terms and conditions of College awards, and select recipients of awards. The sub-committee also supervises the administration of various faculty fellowships (Bull Fellowship; Laforet Fellowship) and the administration of the College bursary funds.  This subcommittee, has two student members (one DVM and one graduate student). It is chaired by the Associate Dean, Students.

Curriculum
This 15-member sub-committee, which includes two student members, develops academic policies for the delivery of the DVM Program based on the curricular principles approved by Senate. It also reviews course and program outcomes and provides feedback to course coordinators and Chairs with recommendations for change or improvement where appropriate. Members report the outcomes of reviews to the DVM Program Committee and initiate and respond to requests from the DVM Program Committee for changes to improve its quality or effectiveness. Additionally, it considers and approves changes to courses or Phases that may require Program Committee, Board of Undergraduate Studies, or Senate approval, while considering resource (human and financial) implications as they relate to delivery of the curriculum. Finally, it provides leadership in the planning and implementation of opportunities and changes or additions to the Program that enhance the understanding of, and access to, a broader range of career opportunities. It is chaired by the Associate Dean, Academic.

OVC Research Advisory Committee

This committee provides advice and support to the Associate Dean, Research and Innovation, on all matters that relate to graduate studies and research at the Ontario Veterinary College and is responsible for establishing the competitions for College Summer Student Research awards and the College MSc and PhD Fellowships.  Members also select the successful candidates for these funds. It is chaired by the Associate Dean, Research and Innovation.

Information Technology Steering Committee

In support of the Ontario Veterinary College's learning, research, service and administrative functions, and in consultation with user-groups, the five-member OVC Information Technology Steering Committee (ITSC) establishes the vision, plans strategic directions and sets general policies related to the application of information technology within OVC. It also addresses College-level information technology issues and concerns, conducts further examination of these issues, evaluates opportunities and recommends solutions. The ITSC reports to Dean's Council through the Committee Chair who is currently the Associate Dean, Students.

Interdepartmental DVSc Program Committee

This five-member committee oversees policies and procedures for the Interdepartmental College DVSc Program, including making recommendations regarding the level of stipend support and where the funded positions are allocated. Additionally, it monitors the need for changes and improvements in the DVSc Program. It is chaired by the Associate Dean, Research and Innovation.

Library Committee

Act as a channel of communication between the library and the College, bringing to the attention of the Library any concerns with Library services the faculty and students might have, and explaining to the College particular reasons for Library policies and procedures.
