- Zoonoses account for approx. 60% of known human pathogens and 75% of emerging human pathogens
- Public awareness and concern
- Potential for outbreaks
- Food / waterborne illness
- 80% of category A diseases (catastrophic potential) are zoonotic
- Examples of emerging zoonoses: Global (SARS, Influenza), North America (Lyme disease, West Nile Virus)
