Non-Canadian Students:

Health Care Coverage

There are three different plans to consider when looking at health care coverage for non-Canadian students:

University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) - Mandatory

Student Health Plan - Mandatory

Student Dental Plan - Optional (if you have other dental coverage only)

University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP)

Due to the fact that non-Canadian students are no longer eligible for OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan), the University of Guelph offers non-Canadian students UHIP. Note that UHIP is based on OHIP and it will cover most pre-existing medical conditions.

DVM students will receive their UHIP card during their first week at OVC.

Traveling Outside Canada - the downside to UHIP coverage is that students traveling to the United States will need additional insurance. Please contact Benny Quay for more information:

Student Health Plan

The Student Health Plan helps provide assistance (to a maximum of $5,000 Canadian dollars per year) for things such as prescription drugs (not including dispensing fees), glasses, orthotics, physiotherapy, etc.

You can download your Care Card at the Student Health Plan website. You can use this Care Card at a pharmacy for prescription drugs and it also contains your policy information for submitting additional claims. Your Health Policy number is 330820. Additionally claim forms can be printed from this website.

Student Dental Plan

The Student Dental Plan helps provide assistance (to a maximum of $500 Canadian dollars per year) for things such as examination, diagnosis, x-rays, minor restorations (i.e. fillings), etc.

The Dental Plan is optional only if you already have another dental plan (i.e. covered under your parents plan) , however you will need to fill out a Dental Opt Out Form in order to cancel this policy as all University of Guelph students are automatically enrolled. The deadline for opting out of the Dental Plan is available at the Central Students Association website. You can find Dental Opt Out Forms at the Central Students Association Office:

You will need to pick up your reimbursement cheque at a later date and will receive an email with more information.

You can download your Care Card at the Student Health Plan website. Your Care Card contains your policy information for submitting claims. Your Dental Policy number is 157994. Additionally claim forms can be printed from this website.
