Future DVM Students

Graduate Applicants

The DVM Admissions Committee also considers applications from students who have successfully completed at least three full-time semesters in a science graduate program at the time of application (January 1st). Normally a maximum of five graduate students are selected from this cohort each year.

The graduate cohort was established in 2000 in order to encourage applicants with advanced degrees to apply to the DVM program in the hopes that they would continue in academia, industry, research, etc., after graduation. The graduate cohort selection process is designed to identify applicants who we believe will successfully complete the DVM program and who will upon graduation serve society's needs. Initial rankings are based on the student's overall academic performance, the letters of reference provided, the student's background preparation, and their personal statements. Once the candidates for interview are chosen, it is the interview that is the predominant deciding factor for the graduate cohort.

Non-Canadian applicants are not eligible for admission into the graduate cohort, but may apply through the international cohort and submit their graduate work as part of their application package. Applicants through the graduate cohort must complete the necessary academic prerequisites and non-academic requirements (including necessary documents) as stated for all other Canadian applicants. More information on these requirements and documents can be found under Admission Requirements.

An additional form for graduate applicants is available for the applications in order for them to highlight their achievements as a graduate student. Applicants in this cohort must have completed all requirements for their graduate degree by the end of the winter semester (Fall being their last semester eligible for consideration for grades with a January application) and submitted a first draft (minimally) of their thesis to their advisory committee prior to August 1 of the year of entry to the DVM Program.
