Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Evaluation

Evaluation Process

All hip joints that are considered to be normal (a pass) are classified as normal, without further sub-grading.
Dysplastic dogs (those who did not pass) are graded from OVC Grade I to OVC Grade IV, with Grade I being the least severe and Grade IV being the most severe. The report on dysplastic dogs will also comment on the presence or absence of secondary changes as a consequence of the dysplasia.

Elbows are graded as normal (a pass) or abnormal. If an elbow is considered to be abnormal a written description will be given indicating the nature of the abnormality identified. Typical abnormalities that are identified include an ununited anconeal process, fragmented medial coronoid process, osteochondrosis and secondary degenerative joint disease.

The Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) is a world leader in veterinary health care, learning and research. We work at the intersection of animal, human and ecosystem health: training future veterinarians and scientists, improving the health of our animal companions, ensuring the safety of the food we eat and protecting the environment that we all share. It's been that way since 1862.
