Introduction

Patients seen at the Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre Avian and Exotic Companion Animal Service include pet birds, small mammals (for example, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, small rodents) and reptiles (snakes, lizards, tortoises/turtles). We are the primary ("regular") veterinarian for many of our clients' pets, and also act as a specialist referral service for veterinarians who would like assistance with more complicated cases. We always welcome new clients!

Services offered by the Avian and Exotic Companion Animal Service include routine health checks and vaccinations, elective surgical procedures such as spays and neuters, and detailed evaluation and treatment of more complicated medical and surgical problems. Several specialized surgeries offered at OVC- HSC include pet-bird neutering, radical treatment of rabbit dental abscesses, and ferret adrenal gland removal. With access to all the facilities of a large veterinary teaching hospital, we can offer specialized diagnostic procedures including advanced imaging techniques such as ultrasonography, echocardiology, endoscopy, and MRI and CT scanning. Beaver CT Scan Specialty services in other areas of veterinary medicine are available for consultation as appropriate, including ophthalmologists (eye specialists), neurologists, and cancer care specialists.

We see both new and old patients on every business day of the week. We provide wellness examinations on these non-traditional pets as well as specialized diagnostics and care. The Avian and Exotics Service receives cases transferred from the Emergency Service daily. However, if your pet is in need of an urgent care please call at any time of the day.
