Careers in Lab Animal Science
Laboratory Animal Science (LAS) is an exciting discipline encompassing many fields relating to the use of animals in research, teaching and testing, including biology, genetics, physiology, ethology, regulatory affairs, animal model development, pathology, diagnostics, husbandry, research methodology, and medicine.
Veterinary specialists working in this field may become certified by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, one of the oldest veterinary specialties in North America. The Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Medicine (CALAM/ACMAL) is the professional association for Canadian laboratory animal veterinarians and is an affiliate organization of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.
Post-graduate Training in Lab Animal Science
The University of Guelph is located in south western Ontario and contains within it several unique colleges and research stations, including the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), the oldest veterinary school in North America. The University of Guelph is highly ranked in recent surveys of comprehensive universities in Canada and highly values its research-intensive reputation. The University has received major federal funding for research infrastructure in recent years, including capital to construct a state-of-the-art aqualab, a new surgical research facility and a new imaging facility that includes a MRI unit and a micro-CT scanner.
Several programs are available through the Dept of Pathobiology, OVC to pursue post-DVM specialization in lab animal science.
