In-course awards honour achievement

The achievements of OVC student veterinarians, staff and faculty were honoured Thursday night at the annual in-course awards ceremony. “These awards are based on academic prowess, support of others, and dedication to teaching,” said Dr. Peter Conlon, assistant dean for student affairs and chair of the college awards committee. Conlon said the awards are a reminder to all about the importance of service to others — both animal and human — and reflect the University of Guelph’s dedication to "Changing Lives, Improving Life.”

Symposium and Schofield Lecture a great success

The Graduate Student Research Symposium on November 21 celebrated the achievements of graduate students at the OVC with poster sessions and oral presentations from 38 MSc, DVSc and PhD students. This year's event, paired for the first time with the Schofield Memorial Lecture, was a great success, said Dr. Robert Jacobs, assistant dean, research and graduate studies. “This is a very special event that highlights not only the quality of our graduate students but also the depth and breadth of research being carried out at the college,” said Jacobs.

He may not be smarter than a Canadian fifth grader, and he's not a millionaire, but a recent Ontario Veterinary College graduate is nevertheless much richer for the experience.  Andrew Oster, OVC ’07, racked up $300,000 in winnings before pulling the plug on his quest to win $1 million on the TV game show, Are You Smarter Than a Canadian 5th Grader? Valedictorian of his graduating class, Oster was stumped by a geography question that asked him to identify the southernmost point of Canada's mainland.
