The OVC community honoured the achievements of graduate students, faculty and staff this week.
More than 60 awards with a total value over $220,000 were presented during ceremonies on Thursday, March 27 in the OVC Lifetime Learning Centre.
Highlights this year included a number of new awards as well as the presentation of the Pfizer Faculty Award for Research Excellence and the Carlton L. Gyles Support Staff Excellence Award.
The inaugural Jackson Morris-Rowe Scholarships, created by Mary Rowe and Sandra Morris in honour of Jackson “the wonder dog,” were presented to two students whose work involves research or treatment of cancer.
Nicolle Linnerth, a PhD candidate in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, received the Jackson Morris-Rowe Scholarship for Research in Cancer Biology.
Jennifer Thompson, a DVSc candidate in anatomic pathology in the Department of Pathobiology, was presented the Jackson Morris-Rowe Scholarship for Research in Cancer Clinical Care.
Alex Folkl, an MSc candidate in the Department of Pathobiology, received the inaugural Robert Jameson Memorial Scholarship in Feline Studies. The scholarship originates through an endowed gift from the late Robert Jameson, an avid animal lover who at one point owned six Persian cats.
Dr. Ashley Whitehead, DVSc candidate studying large animal infectious diseases, was presented the J.J. (Jack) Andrich Graduate Award established by Sheila Andrich in memory of her father, who graduated from the OVC in 1940.
Dr. Danielle Richardson, a resident in small animal medicine in the OVC Teaching Hospital, received the first Rathlin & Keale Award of Excellence in Patient Care. The award was established to recognize a resident in a non-degree specialty training program who demonstrated outstanding care, dedication and compassion in patient care and client focus.
Dr. David Kelton, Population Medicine, was the recipient of this year’s Pfizer Faculty Award for Research Excellence. The award goes to a faculty member recognized by his or her peers as an outstanding researcher.
The Calton L. Gyles OVC Support Staff Excellence Award was presented to Karen Richardson in the Department of Population Medicine. The award is presented annually to a staff member who exemplifies the qualities of University professor emeritus Carlton Gyles, including: being an exemplary role model; being thoughtful and compassionate, and being willing to accept responsibility that goes beyond their job function.
