Esophageal intubation will result in significant pollution if not diagnosed before the inhalant is turned on. Proper placement of the endotracheal tube can be verified by visualization in most small animals using good lighting.
A laryngoscope will improve the assessment in cats, small dogs and brachycephalic breeds. This improved view is a necessity when an oral mass exists, or if excess saliva or foreign material is present, although use in all cases is a good habit.

Palpation of the trachea (below the larynx) can also determine that the tube is within the trachea, rather than beside.
