Wet Labs and Lectures Committee

OVC and SCVMA Symposium 2008 will attempt to reflect the unique qualities necessary for successful current and future veterinary practice. As such, four groups have been established which reflect an integration of the goals of both the OVC and the CVMA. We hope that they will help you select both your wet labs and lectures over the weekend to create a balanced view on the profession as well as attaining your personal goals and interests at SCVMA 2008. Please take time to review these “Educational Tiers” that wet labs and lectures will be grouped under when selecting your weekend activities.

Public Health & Animal Population Health
This is an emerging field in Veterinary medicine and will include topics surrounding (but not limited to): zoonoses, surveillance and outbreak, food safety, climate, water and environmental interactions, animal welfare/behaviour and animal models as they relate to food, companion, exotic/zoo/wildlife and sporting animals.

            Individual Animal Health & Well-Being
This particular tier will focus on more traditional and clinical aspects of veterinary medicine including (but not limited to) topics in both medicine, surgery, radiology and diagnostic imaging, herd health, theriogenology, behaviour etc.

            Environmental & Ecosystem Health
This tier will present the interdisciplinary aspects of the role of the veterinarian in environmental and ecological issues. Topics may include (but are not limited to) public health, population health, herd health, pathobiology, role of the veterinarian etc as it relates to this particular field.

            The Art of Veterinary Medicine
This is a field particularly unique to the Ontario Veterinary College as it is an integrated aspect of the curriculum establishing vital communication skills, team dynamics, business management and conflict and stress management. This tier will attempt to address topics which go beyond the clinical aspects of the profession through lectures and labs in client communication skills, client compliance, business management,  hospital corporations and veterinary literature (a particular area of interest of our Dean, Dr Elizabeth Stone).
